Course Summary: Supervisor Training for Excavation and Reinstatement in Public Highways

This comprehensive course is meticulously designed to equip supervisors with essential knowledge and skills required for overseeing excavation and reinstatement operations on public highways. It targets supervisors engaged in such activities, particularly those working for utility contractors (“statutory undertakers”) and those involved in section 50 licenses (like drainage works). By the end of this 5-day course, candidates will:

1. Understand the City & Guilds 6167 scheme training and assessment process for Streetworks Operatives.
2. Gain awareness of Health and Safety legislation and their responsibilities under this Act.
3. Learn about safe working practices and methods within the Highways Industry.
4. Familiarize themselves with key reference documentation used in the industry.
5. Acquire skills to ensure Streetworks are conducted according to the standards set out in the Act.
6. Develop proficiency in using hand and power tools, including Portable Traffic Signal Systems, for highway works.
7. Enhance their ability to read and interpret site plans, particularly for identifying underground or overhead apparatus.
8. Gain expertise in using locating equipment to detect underground apparatus.
9. Strengthen their capability to supervise and monitor sites, ensuring the safety of workers and the public.

The course spans over 5 days and includes Units 101, 110-114, and 116. It encompasses a variety of crucial topics:

• Training and assessment process for Streetworks Operatives.
• Health and Safety legislation pertaining to highway works.
• Safe working practices and procedures.
• Reference documentation in the Highways Industry.
• Standards for conducting Streetworks.
• Use of hand and power tools specific to highway works.
• Reading and understanding site plans for identifying subterranean and aerial apparatus.
• Employment of locating equipment for underground apparatus detection.
• Supervision and site monitoring techniques.

Practical components of the course involve risk assessments, producing sketches, and the use of specific tools and equipment.

Upon successful completion of the course, each participant will receive a certification. The assessment process for each unit of competence involves both observation and online testing. Supervisors are required to demonstrate their proficiency by observing the performance of an Operative. The certification validates the supervisor’s capability to effectively manage and oversee excavation and reinstatement works in public highways, aligning with industry standards and legal requirements.

Note: Basic comprehension of the English Language is necessary for this course.
