NPORS Telescopic Handler Suspended Loads (N138)

Course Summary:

The NPORS Telescopic Handler Suspended Loads (N138) Training is designed for operators who need to understand the operational and safety requirements associated with suspending loads using a telescopic handler (telehandler). This course aims to provide participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and effectively handle suspended loads using a telehandler. The training duration may vary based on the operator’s experience level, with options for novices and experienced workers.

The primary objectives of this course are as follows:

  • Gain a basic understanding of the industry and the associated hazards and operator responsibilities.
  • Conform to manufacturer’s requirements as per technical data and relevant regulations and legislation.
  • Locate, identify, and explain safe working loads and lifting capacity charts. Understand how the manufacturer may reduce lifting capacity when moving a suspended load, different lifting configurations, and working ranges.
  • Identify and explain different lifting procedures and the tasks that fall into each category.
  • Identify centers of gravity and calculate estimated weights of loads.
  • Recognize overhead and proximity hazards.
  • Establish signal codes, hand signals, direction of movement, safe working, and safe landing placement zones with the slinger/signaller.
  • Ensure the telehandler is in a safe condition and attachments are correctly fitted.
  • Check load integrity and security.
  • Lift and move a load to a designated position safely and with controlled movement.
  • Consider environmental factors.
  • Perform out-of-service and securing procedures.

The NPORS Telescopic Handler Suspended Loads (N138) Training covers a range of important topics, including:

  • Introduction: Understanding the industry, dangers, and operator responsibilities.
  • Manufacturer Requirements: Conforming to manufacturer’s requirements, regulations, and legislation.
  • Safe Working Loads: Identifying and explaining safe working loads, lifting capacity charts, and variations based on different lifting configurations.
  • Lifting Procedures: Identifying different lifting procedures and categorizing tasks.
  • Centers of Gravity: Understanding centers of gravity and calculating estimated weights of loads.
  • Hazard Identification: Identifying overhead and proximity hazards.
  • Communication: Establishing signal codes, hand signals, and communication with the slinger/signaller.
  • Machine Safety: Ensuring the telehandler and attachments are in a safe condition.
  • Load Integrity: Checking load integrity and security.
  • Load Handling: Lifting, moving, and placing loads safely and accurately.
  • Environmental Considerations: Taking into account environmental factors.
  • Out-of-Service: Performing out-of-service and securing procedures.

Upon successful completion of this qualification, participants will receive an NPORS Telescopic Handler Suspended Loads card, which is valid for five years. This card certifies their competence in handling suspended loads using a telescopic handler.

Entry Requirements: Operators are required to provide proof to support their application, including passing the CITB health, safety & environmental touch screen test within two years prior to their application. Additionally, a good understanding of spoken and written English is necessary.
