It covers the safe and effective use of both strimmers (which use nylon lines) for grass and light strimming and brush cutters (which use metal blades) for tougher vegetation like brambles. The course helps participants demonstrate skill, knowledge, and competence in operating these tools following NPORS guidance.

The primary objectives of this course are as follows:

  • Understand the differences between strimmers and brush cutters.
  • Develop the skill, knowledge, and competence required to safely and effectively use strimmers and brush cutters.
  • Comply with NPORS guidance and industry best practices for operating these tools.
  • Pass the assessment to qualify for the NPORS accredited card, valid for three years.

The NPORS Strimmer/Brush Cutter Training covers various essential topics, including:

  • Introduction: Understanding the use of strimmers and brush cutters in forestry, parks, and garden maintenance work.
  • Manufacturer and General Knowledge: Gaining knowledge and awareness of strimmers and brush cutters.
  • Practical Activities: Participating in practical exercises to learn best practices and operating methods for using these tools.
  • Safety and Regulatory Rules: Conducting all pre-operational checks and following safety and regulatory rules.
  • Worksite Preparation: Setting up exclusion zones and preparing the worksite.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Identifying and using specific PPE for handling strimmers and brush cutters.
  • Equipment Handling: Identifying and using manufacturer-approved cutting equipment.
  • Material Disposal: Understanding the disposal of cut materials.
  • Closing Down Procedures: Completing all closing down procedures.

Upon successfully completing this qualification, participants will receive a Traditional Operators card, valid for three or five years, depending on sector-specific or in-company requirements. This card certifies their competence in using strimmers and brush cutters.

Course Duration: The course duration varies based on the participant’s experience level:

  • Novice: For those with no experience or formal training, the course takes two days with a maximum of four delegates.
  • Refresher: Designed for delegates with an expired card or training certificate, the course takes one day with a maximum of six delegates.
  • Experienced Worker Assessment: This option involves theory and practical testing only and takes one day with a maximum of six delegates.
