The primary objectives of this course are as follows:

  • Provide participants with a basic understanding of the lifting industry, including the potential hazards and the responsibilities of a Slinger/Signaller.
  • Instruct participants to conform to manufacturer requirements based on technical data and comply with relevant regulations and legislation.
  • Enable participants to locate, identify, and explain different types of lifting equipment and lifting accessories. This includes understanding their basic construction, uses, applications, and functions.
  • Teach participants to interpret and extract information from all relevant documentation related to lifting operations.
  • Instruct participants in conducting pre-use checks on non-specialist lifting accessories and identifying non-serviceable items. Explain procedures for placing non-serviceable items out of service.
  • Enable participants to identify and explain centers of gravity and calculate estimated weights of loads.
  • Teach participants to set up exclusion zones, explain actions required for emergency situations, and identify overhead hazards.
  • Ensure participants can identify and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for Slinger/Signaller use.
  • Instruct participants in securing various types of loads to a hook using relevant lifting accessories and procedures, ensuring load balance, security, and integrity.
  • Teach participants to direct and guide the movement of loads to different locations using various methods of communication.
  • Cover environmental considerations related to lifting operations.
  • Instruct participants on carrying out all out-of-service and securing procedures.

The NPORS Slinger Signaller (N402) course covers various essential topics, including:

  • Introduction to the Industry: Understanding the industry, its potential dangers, and the responsibilities of a Slinger/Signaller.
  • Compliance: Conforming to manufacturer requirements, relevant regulations, and legislation.
  • Lifting Equipment and Accessories: Locating, identifying, and explaining different types of lifting equipment and accessories, along with their construction, uses, applications, and functions.
  • Documentation: Interpreting and extracting information from relevant documentation.
  • Pre-use Checks: Conducting pre-use checks on non-specialist lifting accessories and identifying non-serviceable items.
  • Load Characteristics: Identifying centers of gravity and calculating estimated weights of loads.
  • Safety Procedures: Setting up exclusion zones, addressing emergency actions, and identifying overhead hazards.
  • PPE: Identifying and maintaining suitable personal protective equipment for Slinger/Signaller use.
  • Load Securement: Securing various load types to a hook using the correct lifting accessories and procedures to ensure load balance, security, and integrity.
  • Load Movement: Directing and guiding load movement to different locations using communication methods.
  • Environmental Considerations: Covering environmental factors related to lifting operations.
  • Out-of-Service Procedures: Conducting all out-of-service and securing procedures.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive an NPORS card. The type of card issued may vary based on factors such as site requirements, prior experience/qualifications of participants, and whether their employer is CITB levy registered and wishes to claim a grant upon completion.

  • NPORS Traditional Card (5 Years): This internationally recognized card is valid for between 3 and 5 years, typically expiring at the end of the month in which the NPORS assessment is completed.
  • CSCS Embossed NPORS Card: This version of the card is widely accepted and requested across the UK by construction and construction allied industries. Trainees need to have passed the HS&E test within 2 years at the point of applying for an NPORS ticket to obtain this card.
    • NPORS CSCS Red Trained Operator Card (2 Years): Issued upon completion of training and/or the NPORS test, available to anyone with a valid HS&E Health Safety & Environment test.
    • NPORS CSCS Blue Competent Operator Card (5 Years): This card can be issued to any operator who has undergone NPORS training/testing and holds a relevant NVQ qualification.

Pre-Course Information: Candidates are expected to have a good understanding of spoken and written English. Additionally, operators must provide proof of having passed the CITB health, safety & environmental touch screen test within two years prior to their application.
