NPORS Safe Working at Height Training (N404)

Course Summary:

The NPORS N404 Safe Working at Height Training is designed to provide operators of all skill levels with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills for safely working at height. The course combines theory and practical instruction to impart a solid understanding of best practices and safe operations.

The primary objectives of this course are as follows:

  • Equip participants with essential knowledge and skills for working at height safely.
  • Ensure compliance with NPORS learning outcomes.
  • Provide a balanced blend of theoretical and practical training.

The course covers the following essential content:

  • Introduction: Familiarization with the specific item of equipment used, including relevant controls and necessary personal protective equipment (PPE). Safe practices for mounting and dismounting are emphasized.
  • Pre-Start and Running Checks: Explanation of the major components of the equipment, their features, benefits, and associated risks. This includes a thorough examination of equipment prior to operation.
  • Operator Responsibilities: Discussion of general responsibilities for equipment operators, with reference to the manufacturer’s handbook specific to the equipment in use.
  • Operating Procedures: Training in safe operating procedures aligned with industry best practices and NPORS guidelines.
  • Shutdown and Parking: Proper shutdown and parking procedures to ensure equipment safety when not in use.

Upon successful completion of the NPORS N404 Safe Working at Height Training, participants will receive an NPORS certification. The validity of the certification can range from 2 to 5 years, depending on various factors. There are several card options available for successful candidates:

  • NPORS Traditional Card (5 years): This internationally recognized card is valid for 3 to 5 years and typically remains valid until the end of the month in which the NPORS assessment is completed. Please note that this version is less suitable for the construction industry and is less widely accepted than the CSCS embossed alternative.
  • CSCS Embossed NPORS Card: In recent years, the CSCS-embossed NPORS card has gained wide acceptance across the UK construction and allied industries. To obtain this card, trainees must have passed the HS&E (Health, Safety & Environment) test within two years at the time of applying for an NPORS ticket. This version of the card is more recognized within the construction sector.
    • Types of NPORS CSCS Embossed Cards:
      • NPORS CSCS Red Trained Operator Card (2 years): This card is issued upon completion of training and/or the NPORS test and is available to anyone with a valid HS&E Health, Safety & Environment test.
      • NPORS CSCS Blue Competent Operator Card (5 years): This card is available to operators who have undergone NPORS training/testing and hold a relevant NVQ.

Pre-Course Information: Candidates are expected to have a good understanding of the English language. While the NPORS scheme permits the use of interpreters, Safeteam can also arrange for an independent interpreter if needed.
