Course Summary:

The NPORS MEWP Boom (N108) course is designed to equip individuals with the knowledge and practical skills necessary for the safe operation of a Mobile Elevated Work Platform (MEWP) Boom. This course is intended for operators who need to operate MEWP Booms safely and efficiently.

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Develop a basic understanding of the industry, recognizing potential dangers and understanding responsibilities as a plant operator.
  2. Acquire a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the specific MEWP Boom to be used, as well as familiarity with other information sources and relevant legislation.
  3. Locate and identify the major components of the MEWP Boom and explain their functions.
  4. Locate and identify steering, driving, and braking controls, providing explanations of their functions.
  5. Conduct comprehensive pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturer’s and legislative requirements.
  6. Check all emergency lowering functions.
  7. Safely mount and dismount the machine.
  8. Configure the machine for travel safely.
  9. Maneuver the machine on level, rough ground, and inclines in open and confined areas.
  10. Conduct all necessary safety checks within the work area, including identifying overhead and underground hazards.
  11. Position the machine in readiness to perform accessing tasks.
  12. Carry out accessing tasks at various points up to full operating height.
  13. Travel with the platform raised (where applicable).
  14. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of loading and unloading procedures for machine transportation.
  15. Execute all end-of-shift and shutdown procedures for the MEWP Boom.

The NPORS MEWP Boom (N108) course comprises the following key components:

  • Basic industry understanding, including industry dangers and operator responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the specific MEWP Boom, as well as other information sources and relevant legislation.
  • Identification and explanation of the major components of the MEWP Boom.
  • Identification and explanation of steering, driving, and braking controls.
  • Comprehensive pre-operational checks in line with manufacturer’s and legislative requirements.
  • Verification of all emergency lowering functions.
  • Safe mounting and dismounting of the MEWP Boom.
  • Configuration of the machine for safe travel.
  • Safe maneuvering of the machine on different terrains.
  • Safety checks within the work area, including identification of potential overhead and underground hazards.
  • Positioning the machine for performing accessing tasks.
  • Execution of accessing tasks at various heights.
  • Traveling with the platform raised where applicable.
  • Knowledge and understanding of loading and unloading procedures for machine transportation.
  • End-of-shift and shutdown procedures for the MEWP Boom.

Upon successful completion of the NPORS MEWP Boom (N108) course, participants will receive an NPORS certification. This certification is typically valid for 5 years, serving as evidence of the individual’s competence in safely operating a MEWP Boom.

Pre-Course Information: Candidates must provide proof of eligibility for the course, including passing the CITB health, safety, and environmental touch screen test within two years prior to applying.

This training equips individuals with the skills required to safely and effectively operate a MEWP Boom while adhering to industry standards and regulations.
