Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Develop a basic understanding of the industry and recognize associated dangers when operating a loading shovel.
  2. Acquire a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook specific to the machine being used.
  3. Identify and explain the major components of the loading shovel and their respective functions.
  4. Locate and identify key controls on the machine and provide explanations of their functions.
  5. Conduct comprehensive pre-operational checks in compliance with both manufacturer’s specifications and legislative requirements.
  6. Identify and maintain personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriate for loading shovel use.
  7. Conduct all necessary safety checks within the work area.
  8. Prepare the loading shovel for use and operate the machinery safely and efficiently.
  9. Consider environmental factors during machine operation.
  10. Address the storage and transportation of implements and attachments.
  11. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of loading and unloading procedures for machine transportation.
  12. Execute all end-of-shift and shutdown procedures for the loading shovel’s safety.

Upon successful completion of the NPORS Loading Shovel (N209) course, participants will receive an NPORS certification. This certification typically remains valid for 5 years, serving as evidence of the individual’s competence in safely and productively operating a loading shovel.

Pre-Course Information: Candidates must provide proof of eligibility for the course, which includes passing the CITB health, safety, and environmental touch screen test within two years before applying. Additionally, candidates should possess a good understanding of spoken and written English.
