NPORS Agricultural Tractor (N601)

Course Summary:

The NPORS Agricultural Tractor (N601) course is designed to provide participants with the necessary knowledge and skills to operate agricultural tractors safely and efficiently. The course offers flexibility, with tailored training durations for both inexperienced learners and experienced operators. Experienced individuals can opt for a one-day Experienced Worker Assessment (Test Only) to demonstrate their competence.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the agricultural industry and its associated hazards, while recognising their responsibilities as operators.
  • Gain a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the specific tractor to be used.
  • Identify and explain the major components and key controls of the tractor.
  • Safely set up an exclusion zone and conduct pre-operational checks according to manufacturer and legislative requirements.
  • Select and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for tractor use.
  • Prepare the agricultural tractor for operation and perform necessary safety checks at the work area.
  • Attach and set trailers, mounted equipment, and PTO drives for operation.
  • Operate machinery safely and efficiently, considering environmental factors.
  • Understand storage and transportation procedures for implements and attachments.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of loading and unloading procedures for machine transportation.
  • Execute end-of-shift and shutdown procedures in compliance with industry standards.

The NPORS Agricultural Tractor (N601) course covers the following key areas:

  • Industry fundamentals and operator responsibilities.
  • Manufacturer’s handbook familiarity and adherence to relevant legislation.
  • Identification of tractor components and explanation of control functions.
  • Pre-operational checks, PPE requirements, and safety zone setup.
  • Tractor preparation and attachment of trailers, equipment, and PTO drives.
  • Safe and efficient tractor operation, with consideration for environmental factors.
  • Storage and transportation guidelines for implements and attachments.
  • Loading and unloading procedures for machine transportation.
  • End-of-shift and shutdown procedures in line with industry standards.

Awarding Body: NPORS (National Plant Operators Registration Scheme) Certification: Certification varies depending on the operator’s qualifications:

  • Existing NPORS Card Holder – No (S)NVQ Held: Trained Operator card, valid for two years, with a requirement to subsequently achieve the necessary (S)NVQ.
  • Existing NPORS Card Holder – (S)NVQ Held: Competent Operator card, valid for five years, inclusive of a CPD record/operator logbook.

Please note that operators must provide proof of passing the CITB health, safety & environmental touchscreen test within the last two years and should possess a good understanding of spoken and written English.
