Upon completing the course, learners will:

• Understand the framework and objectives of Sector Schemes and the importance of quality assurance in traffic management.
• Be knowledgeable about health and safety requirements specific to traffic management, including conducting risk assessments and creating method statements.
• Be familiar with multi-phase traffic signal systems, including pedestrian traffic signals and considerations for non-motorised road users.
• Gain insights into the preparation, planning, installation, commissioning, timing, site maintenance, and removal of multi-phase traffic signal systems.
• Be ready to undertake both on and off-site assessments to demonstrate their competency in implementing, maintaining, and safely removing traffic control systems.

The NHSS 12D M5 course covers a wide array of subjects, including:

• Quality assurance processes and the role of Sector Schemes in traffic management.
• Health and safety requirements, risk assessments, and method statements relevant to the traffic management sector.
• Detailed study of multi-phase traffic signal systems, including operational procedures and safety considerations.
• The process of preparing, planning, and installing multi-phase traffic signal systems, with a focus on pedestrian considerations.

To obtain certification as a 12D M5 Operative, learners must:

1. Successfully complete the NHSS 12D M5 Multi-Phase Traffic Signals course.
2. Undertake a series of prescribed on and off-site assessments as outlined in the Sector Scheme Document within two years of passing the training course.

Each learner is required to be assessed individually, ensuring that unregistered Traffic Management Operatives are supervised by an appropriately registered Traffic Management Operative on a one-to-one basis during traffic management operations. This supervision is crucial for maintaining the minimum competency requirements for gang sizes while assessments are being carried out, guaranteeing that learners can safely and effectively implement multi-phase traffic signal systems in real-world scenarios.
