Upon successful completion of this course, learners will:

• Gain an understanding of Sector Schemes and the importance of quality assurance in traffic management.
• Be knowledgeable about health and safety requirements, including the execution of risk assessments and method statements.
• Be familiar with industry guidance documents and the relevant codes of practice associated with traffic management.
• Identify the equipment necessary for temporary traffic management and convoy operations.
• Understand the specific requirements for convoy working, including the operation of convoy systems on single and dual carriageways.
• Be aware of the considerations necessary for non-motorised road users within convoy working areas.
• Be prepared to undertake an on-site assessment to demonstrate their capability to implement, maintain, and safely remove traffic control and convoy systems.

The NHSS 12D M4 Convoy Working course covers a comprehensive array of topics, including:

• Quality assurance processes and the role of Sector Schemes in ensuring high standards of traffic management.
• Health and safety requirements specific to the traffic management sector, focusing on risk assessments and method statements.
• An overview of industry guidance documents and codes of practice relevant to traffic management.
• The operational aspects of convoy working, including the use of convoy vehicles and equipment.
• Detailed examination of convoy systems for single carriageway operations, both with a single vehicle and with three vehicles.
• The configuration and management of convoy systems for multiple vehicles on dual carriageways.
• Consideration of non-motorised road users in the context of convoy operations.

To achieve certification as a 12D M4 Operative, learners must:

1. Complete the NHSS 12D M4 Convoy Working course.
2. Undertake a single on-site assessment as outlined in the Sector Scheme Document within two years of passing the training.

Each learner is assessed individually, ensuring that unregistered Traffic Management Operatives are supervised by an appropriately registered Traffic Management Operative on a one-to-one basis during their assessment. This ensures the learner’s ability to safely and effectively implement convoy working practices in traffic management operations.
