The NHSS 12C Supervisor course is a specialized one-day training program designed for individuals who will oversee mobile lane closure operations on motorways and high-speed dual carriageways. This course is essential for those intending to work as mobile lane closure supervisors, known as block vehicle drivers, and for individuals aiming to become office-based 12C planning officers (AQP).

Upon completion of the NHSS 12C Supervisor course, participants will:

  • Gain an understanding of National Highway Sector Schemes and general health and safety practices applicable to traffic management.
  • Become familiar with the essential reference documentation related to mobile lane closure techniques.
  • Learn to conduct pre-works checks on mobile lane closure block vehicles, ensuring all equipment is ready and safe for operation.
  • Acquire the skills to conduct effective pre-works briefings for mobile lane closure teams.
  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of mobile lane closure supervisors, ensuring efficient and safe operation of mobile lane closures.
  • Master the practical techniques and principles involved in mobile lane closures, enhancing their capability to oversee such operations successfully.

The course will cover a wide array of topics, including:

To be eligible for certification, participants must:

  • Be currently employed and required by their employer to undertake mobile lane closure operations on motorways and high-speed dual carriageways.
  • For office-based 12C planning officers (AQP), this course is mandatory.
  • Participants must be registered with Lantra as a NHSS 12C Operative (with or without hard shoulders) as a minimum requirement unless they are aiming for the 12C Planning Officer Non-Supervisor role.
  • Completion of the course, including passing the end-of-course test, will certify participants as competent in supervising mobile lane closure operations, with an emphasis on safety, efficiency, and compliance with sector schemes and health and safety legislation.
