Abrasive Wheels – Hand Held Cut Off Saw

Upon completion of this course, participants will:

• Gain a fundamental understanding of the industry and the associated risks.
• Familiarise themselves with the manufacturer’s handbook and relevant legislation.
• Identify major machine components and key controls, explaining their functions.
• Perform pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturer and legislative guidelines.
• Safely choose, inspect, and fit the correct blade for specific tasks.
• Set up a safe work area and conduct necessary safety checks.
• Prepare and operate the machinery efficiently while considering environmental factors.
• Learn about the storage and transport of petrol-driven cut-off saws.
• Execute end-of-shift and shutdown procedures in compliance with industry standards.

The NPORS Abrasive Wheels Cut Off Saw (N017) course covers the following key areas:

• Industry fundamentals and operator responsibilities.
• Understanding manufacturer’s instructions and relevant legislation.
• Identifying machine components and key controls.
• Pre-operational checks and PPE requirements.
• Selection of appropriate blade types for different tasks.
• Safety checks and establishing a safe work zone.
• Machine preparation, operation, and environmental considerations.
• Proper storage and transportation of petrol-driven cut-off saws.
• End-of-shift and shutdown procedures.

Awarding Body: NPORS (National Plant Operators Registration Scheme) Certification: Successful participants will receive an NPORS (Traditional) Operator Card, which is valid for either 3 or 5 years, depending on sector-specific or in-company requirements. This card verifies the individual’s competence in operating hand-held petrol-driven cut-off saws fitted with abrasive wheels. It should be noted that for those operating in the construction sector, the NPORS / CSCS card route should be followed.

• Assessment: Assessment includes NPORS theory assessment with open questions and multiple choice, as well as a practical assessment.
• Entry Requirements: Participants must provide proof of passing the CITB health, safety & environmental touch screen test within two years before applying. Proficiency in spoken and written English is also required.
